What is the irrelevance in the Lord of the Flies?

It is open to your interpretation, Ralph's group: Piggy and Simon, normally have a idea of what needs to be done, what is right and what is wrong but they get ignored by the rest of the group as it is not 'fun'. Maybe its that their sensible ideas are ignored and common sense (in society) may be ignored because of things like power and wealth are valued more.

The way that the majority of the boys follow first Ralph and later switch their allegiance to Jack shows clearly how in everyday life the majority can easily be swayed by powerful, charismatic or persuasive leaders. After the World War II many German soldiers attempted to excuse their actions by stating that they were simply following orders, they didn't personally have any animosity towards Jews etc. In the same way although most of the boys have no animosity towards Ralph they are willing to follow Jack's lead and hunt Ralph down with the full intention of killing him.

In Lord of the Flies the majority of the boys elected Ralph as their leader and agreed to follow his suggestions of building shelters, fetching water, using the rocks as a toilet and keeping a signal fire lit. When Jack later asked the boys to reject Ralph's leadership the boys remained silent and didn't comply with Jack's wishes. Yet, the boys eventually joined Jack's tribe. Why didn't the boys follow Ralph's plans and build shelters, gather water and use the rocks for a toilet? Why didn't they seem to grasp the importance of keeping the signal fire lit and why did they defect to Jack, when they had twice rejected him as leader? Perhaps the book illustrates the difference between the idealised world of politics and the reality of peoples' lives. Government supposedly rules by the will of the People, just as Ralph was leader because the boys chose him and yet when it came to the crunch they flocked to Jack. Their reason may have been partially because he offered them meat (bribery), partly from fear of violence (Jack is an aggressive boy) but mainly because they want to have fun and Ralph's idea's sounded too much like hard work for a group of boys. Especially when the dangled alternative is to run around half naked, wearing war paint and kill pigs, for food but mainly for fun. So I think that what the book teaches us is that while politics appeals to our ideals sometimes it doesn't address our more basic needs, which is perhaps one reason why people often break the very laws they elected politicians to create.

Several. At first, a sort of Direct Democracy. Ralph is elected chief. He hears the people's concern's directly through the "assemblies". One must take into account however that if Ralph didn't see the logic in any outside suggestions, they have no political means of having their requests pushed through.
