A stone heap is a human-made rock formation created by placing stones one by one in a spiral. There are many native American heaps in upstate New York. They were created several hundred years ago at the crossing of two paths. A passing native added to the spiral when he or she reached the crossroads. The stone heap continues until it is 12 feet wide and 6 ft high and then it is topped by another heap 6 ft in and 6 ft high. Hermes means "stone heap" and is common in areas of Greece and Turkey but no one knows how the Native American began making stone heaps.
