he takes on keeping the fire going
When Ralph is initially elected leader he confirms that the choir still belongs to Jack. Jack says that he wants his choir to be hunters, to supply the boys with meat by hunting pigs. After they light a signal fire on the mountain Jack says that his hunters will take on the responsibility for keeping the fire lit.
When the initial signal fire was lit all the boys had helped to build it. In an apparently generous offer Jack volunteer that his hunters would take on the responsibility of keeping the fire lit in future. This announcement was greeted with appreciative applause from the other boys.
The hunters were responsible for keeping the signal fire lit but, they in Chapter 4 they let it burn out which destroyed an early survival because a ship went past.
When Jack is asked, in chapter 10: the Shell and the Glasses, how they will light the fire he replied, "We shall take fire from the others." Later that night Jack went with Roger and Maurice to raid the shelters and stole Piggy's glasses.

It can mean the distance the fire is traveling. It can also mean the distance it will take the firemen to arrive.
