It is usually governed according to what the subject of the speech is about. If it is a specific lecture then the back of the room and the two side are where I usually speak, indicating that I am including all of the audience. If I give a talk in church I will start off by addressing the back of the room. I can then get some ides if the congregation are going to give me their full attention because of the subject matter. I then will turn my head either to the left , right or to the center. This then gives me some eye to eye contact with most of the congregation indicating that I am addressing them personally.
