Well, when Bella turns into a vampire, she discovers that her gift is being a shield. She can repel any other gifts that have to do with the mind. That's why Edward can't hear her and Jane can't give her pain. Bella can protect those around her from those gifts by wrapping her shield around them. But when she's inside the shield with others, anyone else inside the shield can do things to her with their gifts.
