Allomancers were people who could 'burn' certain metals, temporarily gaining powers. Those who could burn only one were called mistings, those who could burn all-Mistborn.
Clubs was able to burn copper, which allowed him to hide other allomancers around him from being discovered.
In Mistborn, writing in metal was safe because it could only be read and understood by Allomancers who could burn the metal to decipher the message. This made it a secure way to communicate without non-Allomancers being able to easily intercept and decode the information.
