After "The Outsiders," S.E. Hinton experienced writer's block, struggled with personal issues, and felt pressure to live up to the success of her first novel. This led to a longer gap between her books. She eventually overcame these challenges and went on to publish more novels, including "That Was Then, This Is Now" and "Rumble Fish."
Once published, The Outsiders gave her a lot of publicity and fame, and also a lot of pressure. S.E. Hinton was becoming known as "The Voice of the Youth" among other titles. This kind of pressure and publicity resulted in a three year long writer's block.
