True, if Edward had stayed away from Bella when he first planned to, she wouldn't've met James, or gone to the ballet studio, or got hurt. But if Edward hadn't loved her and been there to save her, she would be dead. Edward thinks it's his fault that Bella was lying in the hospital bed with broken bones and a myriad of cuts, but Bella believes that it's Edward's fault that Bella is still alive. It just depends on how you look at it.
