While still in Carvahall, Eragon was good friends with his cousin, Roran, and still remains that way. After he leaves for the Varden, he meets up with a man who eventually saves his life. Murtagh hated his father and the legacy he carries because of him. When he met up with Eragon, he was fleeing from Galbatorix, who wanted to control him. Murtagh would have to be considered Eragon'd best friend because even after Eragon discovers that he's working for Galbatorix, he tries to set him free from the evil king.

Eragon's best friend was his dragon, Saphira. They shared a special bond as Dragon Rider and dragon, and Saphira was always by Eragon's side throughout their adventures.
