Yes, many online communities say lol.
"LOL" means laugh out loud so they might say "LOL that was funny". LOL also means lots of love. People say LOL when they are texting or IM-ing. They say that because it's faster instead of actually typing "I'm laughing out loud" and it's easier on the thumbs if texting. RandomGirl123
Originally, people used 'lol' to say that they were "laughing out loud". But now, it has just become a thing to separate sentences or put when they have nothing else to say. LOL Something else you might wonder about. Do you literally Laugh out loud when you type LOL. Around 90% of the people who type out LOL on the computer don't literally laugh out loud. I notice LOL is overused. I think it shows a social nervousness that can be taken as friendly or derisive depending on the context.

Most people use "lol" as a casual expression and not necessarily to indicate genuine laughter out loud. So, there may be some individuals who do genuinely laugh out loud when they say "lol," but it is likely that the majority are not physically laughing.
