Jonas initially believed that a release was a beautiful ceremony where individuals were sent to Elsewhere to live happily. He later discovers that release is actually the term for euthanasia, where individuals are killed.
In the book, The Giver shows Jonas what "Release" really means. So Jonas learns "Release" means death. For instance, they place you into a special room and give you an injection to kill you. That's what they do to the Elderly when they have lived long enough, and they "Release" them. Sad though, those who aren't quite happy with their community, can just simply apply for "Release."
