Why is a good marriage so important later in life?

Because it's the biggest commitment you will probably ever make in your life and also, if there are children involved you have to think further than your own feelings. It is so easy when some little thing goes wrong in a relationship to brush it off and find someone else. It takes a mature person to stand firm and work through the problems. No different than being in debt, but still paying your bills. If you don't conform to marriage or making your word ring true, then you are basically letting yourself down. Anything worth having is worth fighting for. For women there is no incentive in any western "safety net" country. Extorted tax dollars have removed the need for the male role model / provider / protector. He has now been replaced with the state daddy, and the ever intrusive police. On a level deeper than most people comprehend, its part of the same socialism that will inevitably implode this society unless big governments are voted out.

when people get older the friendship and under standing they have formed with each other start to mean a lot more than in their youth. when young there are many things to do and many people to interact with. this changes Older people have fewer friends and tend not to go out as much relying on those close to them much more. therefore if a person has formed a strong relationship with a partner during their life this can be a great comfort.
