Animals with backbones, or spinal columns, are called vertebrates. There are only around 65,000 known species of vertebrates. This sounds like a lot, but it is only about 3% of all the animals on Earth. Most animal species are invertebrates, i.e., with no backbone.

The 5 types of vertebrates are: mammals, birds, fish, amphibians, and reptiles.

These animals are all part of the phylum chordata, meaning having a spinal cord.
