The human eye has a lens and a retina to send a whole lot of information to the brain. An insect does not have anywhere near the amount of room in its head for such an eye. It uses a compound eye instead. Each little piece has two light receiving sensors. The advantage of the shape is that it is round. The structure makes it stable yet flexible. Recent research indicates that the receptors in the compound eye work in a way similar to the rods and cones in the human eye. Insects can see like people see. This extremely simple structure has suddenly become far more interesting than it was a few years ago.
