A really WELL broke Walker can be an excellent horse for kids to learn on. The key is being very well broke! One problem with Walkers is if your child wants to show (4-H or FFA), most judges do not know how a Walker is supposed to look. In the USA you will find a Walker at a bit of a disadvantage in the open show ring. If you get a super well trained, gentle horse then it may be worth the show ring disadvantage. The biggest thing in selecting a horse for kids isn't breed, but the amount and quality of the training and the horses general disposition.

I find that my TWH (and many other horses of other breeds) prefer bitless bridles, but bosals aren't good for walking horses because of their head action. The bottom tends to come up and hit them when they move their head, or so I've heard. I ride in a halter, and you can also get the Bitless Bridle. But other than the bosal, Walking horses will go in anything. If I have to have a bit I prefer a snaffle because it's so gentle, and the horses seem to like it better too.
