Best Answer

Yes, worms and bugs and any crawly creature they care to consume.

Chickens are omnivores and love to chase down insects. It is also good for them to get a little extra protein into their diet. In the winter here, when bugs are scarce, I cook up a pot of spaggetti for my hens once in awhile and feed it to them. They think it is worms and madly race around trying to steal it from each other.

I hate to say this, but YES chicken eggs do get worms!

I always inspect my eggs really carefully for ickies and lo and behold, there it was! Unfortunately I found a worm in my egg this morning. Luckily I was preparing to make a fried egg, if it was a boiled egg I would've eaten it. It's a common large chicken round worm but it is rare that it finds it's way into an egg. It was in the thin clear albumen and looks like a thin, curved white elastic band. It is called a (Ascaridia galli) Really gross! I'll never look at an egg the same way again!

This is the explanation I found: it is thought that the ascarid may have migrated from the cloaca up the oviduct to a position anterior to the isthmus of the oviduct. Here they were incorporated in the albumen. (you'll have to look up the structure of a chicken and an egg to understand this!).

Happy egg watching!

*Food Grade Diotamaceous Earth or D.E. is a wonderful multi-purpose, natural helper of chickens.

-mix it with their feed to help prevent worms

-dust them with it to prevent mites and lice

-mix it in their bedding to kill and prevent mites and lice and fleas

-mix with water to white wash coop walls that may be infested with mites or other critters

-use to kill fire ants without putting poison in your grass where your chickens might get it

The yolk and white of an egg is quite sterile (although store-bought eggs can sometimes host viruses like salmonella). If the egg is dirty, wash it off before you crack it, as chicken dung can include worm eggs, and is sometimes stuck to the outside of the egg. Make sure your hens have a safe, clean place to lay. Dirty nesting areas will greatly increase their susceptibility to worms, other parasites and contagious viruses.

Looking at the hens' dung can establish if they have worms. If so, the best remedy is garlic. Chemical wormers will not only make the eggs inedible for weeks, but they will end up harming your hens.

Typically, eggs are sterile, and will not contain worms, but if the hen has a overly large worm load, even the eggs can be infected. Hens with worms should be treated right away anyways. Garlic is a very effective, and safe treatment that will not affect the taste of the eggs. Feed your chickens some crushed garlic that has soaked in vinegar or oil for at least 24 hours. Repeat as often as necessary. Garlic is also a great preventive treatment and health tonic for chickens, that can be fed to them on occasion when they are healthy.
