Hornets are much bigger and their sting is much more painful than bees. Hornets can also sting more than once because it doesn't detach form its body unlike bees. Hornets tend to be more agressive than bees, but they are much less aggresive in general than wasps.

Do bees bite?

No bees do not bite. They sting. Honey bees have barbed stingers and if they sting a person or animal the barbs in their stinger will stick. When they fly away their rear end is torn off and they die. Bees can sting other insects multiple times and their stinger won't stick because insect flesh is pulpy. Bumble bees (the large fuzzy bee) does not have a barbed stinger. However this particular bee has a very docile personality and is more likely to fly away than sting. Honey bees and bumble bees only eat pollen and nectar from flowers. Bees, Wasps and Hornets do have mouth parts called mandibles which they use for scraping, chewing food and building combs. Wasps and hornets can sting as well. Their stingers are not barbed and they can sting multiple times. These insects are omnivores - they eat all foods. Yellow jackets are very commonly seen when eating food outdoors. They enjoy sugary pop, hot dogs, tuna sandwiches, etc. Yellow jacket wasps tend to become more aggressive in the fall when their food supply is dwindling and they are hungry. Wasps and hornets will eat other insects, and can use their mouth parts to cut up the dead insect in pieces that they carry back to their hive to feed their young.

Are hornets colour blind?

Can ground bees kill you?

Yes they can be dangerous and some people make the mistake of not realizing that they could be wasps or hornets. In British Columbia we have hornets that live in mud under water! Many people have been stung with them. If you or anyone in your family (including pets) are bitten give Benadryl antihistamines (ready label for adults and children) and if a pet is bit, take them immediately the vets. You are going to need an exterminator to help you rid yourself of these ground pests.

Are hornets or wasps more dangerous?

Both wasps and hornets can kill you but wasps are more aggressive though less common, really it depends on your personal health and the ratio of hornets to wasps like if there are hundreds of hornets and ten wasps, hornets are a bigger problem and if there are hundreds of wasps and ten hornets wasps are a bigger problem. personally I'd rather have a hornet after me than a wasp. Bees are great though they don't sting unless you hurt them and they are simply cool to have around.

Do killer bees make honey?

'Killer bee' is a term from sensationalist movies and media reports. The correct name for them is Africanized honey bees, and the sting from an Africanized bee is no more dangerous than a sting from a European bee. Finally, to answer the question: Yes, they produce honey just like other honey bees.

I recently saw at least a dozen or more bees or wasps flying very low on my lawn how can I find out where they are coming from?

Bees have round fat bodies and are usually yellow with dark chocolate to black stripes across their body. They pollinate during the spring and summer, but when Fall is close they will often become most dormant and actually walk across your lawn. Hornets and Wasps have elongated bodies and can be golden in color, some with stripes. They will also walk along the glass in a dormant state (this is nature.) You should get a professional in to find out where the hive is. If these are bees (fat in body with the stripes) then phone a beekeeper who would be more than willing to find the hive and take it away. Bees in the U.S. and Canada have literally be dying and are disappearing, so save the bees! Bees aren't generally dangerous or aggressive, but hornets and wasps are. If these are hornets or wasps then find an exterminator that uses environmentally safe sprays (may have to be done twice, but you are not charged for the second time.) I had a wasps nest that was huge in my attic and it took the exterminator a second time to get rid of them completely.

Can you stay alive if you get bit by a killer bee?
