Young male elephants may do so when they are trying to prove themselves as being powerful during a mating season or when preparing to challenge a dominant male. Elephants have been known to enter villages in groups and trample through them causing damage, often believed to be looking for a missing elephant. Generally though, elephants and humans can co-exist in peace.
