No dog is naturally mean or vicious it all depends on the owner and how they treat the dog, this goes for pitbulls as well.

(aswell as the above) Pitbulls, like any other dog, have the ability to bite. In fact, you are more likely to be bitten by a chihuahua than a pitbull.

However, pit bulls have been bred for a locking jaw. One theory is that before bulls got butchered, they had to be taken to be slaughtered. If a bull got out of line, a dog would need to either attack it or bite it. And one theory is that the dog would have to hang on to the nose and not let go. So they had jaws capable of being strong and powerful. A labrador, for instance, was called a labrador retriever to retreive shot down birds. When they bought the bird back to their 'master' the bird could not be damaged, so the jaw didn't need to be as strong. So if you asked a pit bull to bring back a dead bird, it's likely to be alot more damaged than if given to a labrador.

There are many other theories for their evolution, like them being used on ships to catch rats until sailors found smaller dogs that could reach the vermin more gracefully and kill them easily. The pit bull dog was then used in dog fighting for entertainment. But there are so many theories including being bred purely for fighting, as a companion and to catch various creatures.

Whatever it was, somehow a big, powerul jaw was bought in. So if you got bitten by a pit bull, it would be so much worse than another dog. Because of this, you are more likely to say...lose an arm. And with that, you are so much more likely to get in the newspapers.

It has nothing to do with the breed. Just the way they are treated, handled, and cared for. By no means is a pit bull more likely to attack than a chihuahua, it is just when they DO (and IF they do) it is alot worse and that is how they got the reputation. Answer no they are not mean at all. they are very sweet dogs. it all depends on how you treat the dog. and if you are looking for a calm big dog you won't find it in pitbulls. they love to play and want your attention 24/7, but they are also big snuggle bugs. enjoy your dog!
