Yes there are! People swim, wade, boat, fish and most everything else wih no fear. It puzzles me though, because if we were 10 miles inland and there was a lake or river with gators in it, nobody would go in the water. For some reason, which I have been unable to figure out, they don't seem to bother people in the Indian River. I live a block off the river on a barrier island (the ocean side of the river)and my neighbor just told me there is an eight footer down the street by the river. His wife cut in, "He was bigger thatn that!" Final words from me: Be careful!

The intercoastal waterway begins North of Tampa (around Tarpon Springs) and follows the coast until Ft. Meyers beach. Two options approach: One, continue along the intercoastal across the state through Lake Okeechobee and connecting with the east coast Intercoastal, or continue south down the old intercoastal and work your way around the state. Tampa bay connects to the intercoastal at the Skyway bridge.
The dormant period runs from October to March for American alligators. They dig "gator holes" close to frequented waterways and take cold-weather naps. The tunnels can be quite lengthy, sometimes 50 or more feet. Once the gator moves out, other animals make use of the burrows the alligators so thoughtfully provided. evergladesholidaypark.com/facts-about-alligators/
I'm sorry to say that the settlement of Charles Towne (later changed to Charleston) was only in its "discription on paper" phase in England. It was not "founded" until 1670. Indians that might have been in that area were the Kiawah, Wando and Etiwan. The Edisto, Stono and Sewee may also have traded in this area. It was the typical intercoastal, swampy terrain that abounded in sea birds and critters of the intercoastal waterways.
There are several waterways around the UK. A few of the waterways are the West Midlands Waterways, South Wales and Severn Waterways, and the North East Waterways.
