Even though you can geld a colt a few months after being born, it is a good idea to geld them around two or three years old to prevent the horse from mounting horses in the pasture. This is also a good idea because this is the age where colts begin to get aggressive around mares and gelding the colt will prevent this. Waiting anywhere after five years old is probably a bad idea.

A male animal is castrated or neutered when his testicles are surgically removed to prevent the animal from fathering young and/or to decrease the amount of testosterone in the animal. ∙ 15y agoIt is possible to geld a stud colt shortly after birth but that is not popular nor recommended. Normally, colts are gelded between 6 months and 2 years of age. Some stud colts will begin showing stallion traits at an early age (6 - 8 months old) and begin harassing mares or generally making a nuisance of themselves, while other horses may not show any signs of wanting to mate until 2 years old. It's basically a personal choice that depends on your philosophy regarding horse care and training, what you want out of your horse, the individual horses physical and emotional condition, the laws of your state or rules of your boarding facility (if they're boarded), etc.

∙ 14y agoSheep are rarely castrated by surgical means. Instead, a tight rubber ring is fastened around the scrotum and the testicles. The ring cuts off blood to the testicles and lower scrotum, which die and fall off.
This must be done before 7 days of age.
