You should never give a dog or any other pet any medication intended for humans that hasn't been specifically prescribed for them by a veterinarian.

That said, dogs can tolerate opiates, probably better than humans can. Remember, though, that most humans weigh far more than most dogs. If you give your chihuahua a pill left over from your own prescription he'll probably die. This is especially true because the pills for human use usually contain acetaminophen/paracetamol as well, which is highly toxic to dogs (and even more so to cats).
