A goat can eat straw. It's not like it will kill it or anything. But it is by no means a source of nutrition. A goat should be fed both Alfalfa hay/ grass hay mixture - because too much high protein, or constantly eating high protein (alfalfa) can cause diarrhea, but grass hay doesn't have nearly enough nutrients for a goat to stay healthy. A goats also need some sort of grain, not a lot, -though it will eat a lot, if given the choice- but at least a few cups a day per goat In the grain, to ensure it gets all the necessary nutrition, you should mix Black Oil Sunflower seeds, Baking Powder, and some sort of minerals (depending on where you live, the climate and what minerals are already found there. Just talk to your local feed market) And contrary to the common belief, goats will NOT eat anything (especially a tin can) if they are fed correctly. They might nibble, as a baby might, to taste and feel with their lips, what the object might be, but they will normally not eat anything inedible, if they have access to all the nutrients they need.
