All breeds of rabbits can be kept outdoors, but they'll live much longer and happier lives if they're kept indoors. Living outdoors exposes them to heat, cold, parasites, and the stress of potential predators hanging around. Plus, outdoor bunnies tend to get lonely because their owners just don't hang around outside at much as they do inside.

Mini lops have the same behaviours and needs as other pet rabbits. There are many risks that threaten rabbits outside, but if you can do a reasonable job of preventing them, then your bunny can live outside just fine.

Outdoor Risks for mini lops and all pet bunnies:

  • Hot temperatures can lead to heat stress and heat stroke
  • Cold temperatures, and cool wet and breezy weather, can lead to hypothermia
  • Predators (wild animals and outdoors pets) can kill your rabbit; even if they can't get in the rabbit's hutch, rabbits can die from shock when they're being stalked, so the bunny needs something to hide in inside the hutch
  • Other people might tease or even hurt your rabbit
  • Parasites and insects can hurt your rabbit
  • Exposure to toxins can make your rabbit sick - like pollution, pesticides, diseases in the environment, bacteria in the dirt, etc.
  • "Foxtails" can work their way into a rabbit's orifices and folds in the skin leading to severe illness
  • Your rabbit might not get much attention out there; it's easy to forget about what you don't see - but bunnies need attention daily because they're social animals, also they need exercise, and you should observe appearance and behaviour daily so that you can catch illness/injury early on

See the related questions below for details about how to care for rabbits - they apply to mini lops as well as all pet rabbits.

Is there a difference between dwarf lops and holland lops?

Mini Lops didn't get their name from "mini" ears at all. At the time that the breed was being created, the Holland Lop was not yet a breed in the US. Bob Herschbach, the Mini Lops' created, called them Mini Lops because they were a "mini" version of the French Lop (which they still are). Ultimately, both the Mini Lop and Holland Lop were accepted as breeds at the same time by the American Rabbit Breeders Association in 1980. YES! dont let names confuse you. holland lops are much smaller than mini lops! mini lops got their name from their "mini" ears!
