Any dog can have idiosyncrasies. It depends how strong the breed is, or if you get the dog from the SPCA or ASPCA. Dogs can have strange habits if they have been abandoned, beaten, neglected, starved, left to fend for itself, or had several owners. Dogs and cats aren't really any different than humans. They feel pain, their feelings get hurt, but unlike humans, pets remain loyal no matter what. If you ever have a dog that has indiosyncrasies work with the dog, go to training with it and give it lots of love and support and by all means some fun such as playing in a park and throwing a ball, or a simple quiet walk somewhere. Let them become part of your life to a degree of course. Let the dog know he/she can trust you. With time and patience there isn't much you can't train a dog to do.

Learn about the breed of dog. If you plan on getting a dog from the SPCA or ASPCA remember that the dog has to get use to you. If you find they are not well trained then you and the dog should go to training schools (there are classes all over the place you can take and even ask your vet where these training classes are.) It takes time for the dog to get use to the owner (and family) and time for you to get to know the dog. Don't just get a dog and then leave it alone right away. You have to bond with this dog, so try getting a dog while you are on holidays and can spend sometime with it.

I walk my 2 dogs every single day no matter what the weather. I throw sticks or a ball and we just have a fun time. When they are good I praise them, and they are well trained and listen to commands when I speak in a soft voice. I love them, cuddle them and they are very comfortable and no problem at all. Dogs love it when you get on the floor (or grass) with them and tussle gently with them. You are down to their level. Both my husband and I do this every single night (we make the time no matter how busy our schedule is.) A happy dog is a dog that will cause you few problems.
