shedding a little lightI don't have the complete answer, but I have seen roosters with shaved talons. I wonder if a file was used, I'm thinking a chain file? I also wonder if these talons have a blood supply like when you cut your dogs nails and cut too much, and they bleed?

More Info

Yes you can trim a roosters spurs. Trimming the spurs on a rooster can be done several ways.

Hand filing is a little tedious and can be difficult with a struggling rooster. Full grown spurs cannot/should not just be cut like you would with a dogs nails, they will bleed profusely and can actually bleed out a bird if done wrong.

Use a dremel tool or rotary grinder for quick trim jobs and file away only about 1/3 of the length to avoid blood loss. File flat so the spur is blunt.

The rock and twist method involved pliers. First move the spur back and forth until the spur breaks at the base, with a light grip then twist the hard spur releasing it from the inner core. You will be left with a soft inner core which may bleed a little.

I will give you a good link with pictures to get more information. See RELATED LINKS

Don't cut them. Place a hot potatoe(cooked in microwave is faster) on the talon, as in peirce the potatoe with his talon and hold it on there for 5-10 minutes. Remove potatoe and twist off talon. He'll be left with a short fleashy talon. If it bleeds all you need is a little septic power available at most pet stores. They grow back.

When do roosters mostly crow?

== == All of my roosters start crowing around 5-6 months old. Roosters will usually make their first attempt at crowing between 5 and 8 weeks old. At that time the males in the flock will also start trying to establish dominance over the other roosters of the same age.Even the adult rooster gets challenged which always results in a quick tail kicking and a dash for cover for the upstart. This is usually the point when the culling begins and those feisty little upstarts are either off to the freezer or to another farm.

Do roosters fly?

According to Wikipedia's distrobution map, there are chickens (hens and roosters) in several African communities (mostly coastal) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Image:2004chicken.PNG Hens and roosters are kept primarily for agricultural purposes, and roosters (male chickens) are required to maintain a breeding population. Roosters can be aggressive and territorial, and so are usually kept in much lower quantities than hens since they do not produce eggs. Guns, Germs, and Steel: The Fates of Human Societiesis a 1997 book by Jared Diamond, and it includes an in-depth look at the spread of domesticated animals throughout the world. It describes why domesticated animals have a broader geographic range than wild animals, and provides some historical evidence as to when various animals, including chickens first appeared in Africa, Asia, and Europe.

Why do some roosters fall over?

Most likely the rooster is sick. There is also the possibility that his spurs are too long and he is tripping himself as he walks. Check the roosters spurs and trim them if needed.
