According to the myth, cattle are slow-moving, slow-witted and weak-legged, and can easily be pushed over without much force, both because they have a high centre of gravity, and because they sleep standing. However, despite the widespread legend of tipping cows, numerous publications have debunked the practice's feasibility.

Cows are indeed rather top-heavy, but even considering this most of them, I have found are somewhat bow-legged. I think it's more myth than fact.

As a teenager I used to sneak up on my horse while she was sleeping and sometimes give her a gentle push. Always...always, she could catch herself and remain balanced. But almost always she'd lie down in her stall and I'd curl up and place my head where her hind leg curved into her stomach. A much preferable and kind thing to do with one of God's creatures. She rather liked it and would eventually drift off whilst watching me. She was always quite protective of me.

I tried 'tipping' my Jack Russell once. But he pointed out that he was unquestionably an all inclusive mutt!

Can you really go cow tipping?

Cow tipping is a myth and not a real activity. Cows are not easily tipped over when they are standing, as they are heavy and stable animals. Attempting to tip over a cow can be dangerous for both the cow and the person trying to tip it. It's best to treat animals with respect and leave them undisturbed.

What happens if you tip over a cow?

She'll get right back up and may either run away, or turn on you and send you flying. If you've got her mad enough she may even try to kill you. Unlike most urbanites think, a cow that is "tipped" is able to move her feet under her to get back up again. They are able to lay on their side, and roll back up to a sitting position with their feet tucked under them. Unless you have her in a ditch or gully where she cannot easily roll back to her side to get her on her feet again, a cow is always able to get back up after falling down--except if she broke her leg, pelvis, or dislocated her hip.

Will a cow die if you tip her over?

No, but you can injure it if you somehow manage. Just be careful. A lot of city kids that go cow tipping do not realize that some of them will chase you. It will be embarrassing to explain that you got your arm broke when a cow ran you over after you picked on it. Or even better, that the huge bruise you have is where you couldn't tip her, but she head-butted you instead. Keep in mind that they kick...with several hundred pounds of force behind it. Also, remember bulls can kick your butt badly...and that angry farmers may not be something you want to deal with either. It's probably best to just leave Betsy alone.
