Can you shoot a dog for being on your property?

The law varies from state to state as to if you can legally shoot a dog.In many states if a dog is endangering your livestock (chasing,terrorizing,harming,killing ect) the dog can be shot on sight. If a dog is endangering you,your pets or anyone on your property it can also be shot on sight.There are also numerous local/county laws concerning the legal shooting of dogs, some even allow the shooting of a dog on your porperty if the dog is damaging the property or its contents,causing a nusance,or doesnt have a rabies tag. check with local court house to find out the laws in your area..

For the nusance dogs that some people love to let roam free to deficate in other peoples yards,rip open trash cans,dig holes in the flower beds and chew up your cable tv lines you can settle for a non lethal method of control such as a paint-ball gun,

pepper spray(the kind used for bears) or purchase a large live animal trap and then take the dog to the local pound..if it has a collar and ID tag then keep the animal and contact the owner and tell them to keep the dog in its yard.

It depends on the leash laws in your area and several factors. If your dog was in his/her yard and if it was fenced. If the intruding dog was a stray or a neighbors dog and should have been on a leash. If you dog was in the front or back yard and on a leash/fenced area.

If you are in fear for you life, then yes. But it would be better to have something else on you, such as pepper spray or something along those lines. Don't shoot a dog for something minimal such as barking at you or just threatening you. I carry a buggy whip with me when walking my dogs.
