I couldn't tell you about the cost, but this is what I've just learned: our Wirehaired Dachshund, who's 9 months old, has just been diagnosed with FCP. She's been given a supplement to take for two months that will promote healthy bone and connective tissue growth. Her only symptom was that she started limping for no rhyme or reason about 1 1/2 months ago and so we've gone down the path of trying to figure out why as she's just a puppy and has had no injuries that we know of. My vet told me today that if she were a larger breed, i.e., Lab, Golden Retriever, Rottweiler, etc. that she would HAVE to have surgery and that it's a pretty lengthy recovery process in that the leg is immobilized for a month with physical therapy to follow. Because of her size, and because it doesn't seem to ail her much, we'll have to wait to see what happens after she's finished the two month course of medicine. If your dog needs the surgery, you shouldn't hesitate to do it. I'm sorry I can't help you with the cost, but FCP can be quite painful and does not improve over time in larger breeds. Good luck.
