In the colonial days, this was a person hired to herd the cattle to and from the "commons". The commons essentially was a community pasture that was too small for the increasing population of cattle in the conolial settlements, and so cattle were hered to graze outside of the colony during the day and come in at night.

Nowadays, a cattle keeper is either called a cowhand, cowboy, rancher, farmer or cattle producer.
