Dogs do many things with the bones that you give them, it just depends what they like to do. Many dogs will bury their bones in your yard. My dogs will chew on the bones until the disappear, especially raw-hides.
A dog gnaws on a bone. Bones help the dog's teeth not grow so fast. In other words, it makes a dogs teeth shorter. Another thing is that dogs chew on a bone because they still scent the smell of what was on the bone before it was bare. If they like the scent, they chew away! Giving a dog a bone is good because if they crack it open, they can eat all the kinds of nutrients in side. There are MANY things a dog can do with a bone!!
