Best Answer

When it doesn't smell prey.

Basically, when they smell blood they wake up and say It's eating time, finally! But you wouldn't hear them say it. Anyway, but when they don't smell blood they feel tired of eating all day so they sleep.

Of course, crododiles and Alligators do sleep, all animals have to sleep somehow, (whatever strange way it may be)We know that sleep is very important for humans. It gives our bodies and our brains time to rest, refresh, and develop so that we can concentrate an learn when we are awake.

Studies on Crocs have shown that they sleep intermittently throughout the day, but that they are very light sleepers.

Hope it helped, x. :)

Can you put an alligator to sleep by rubbing it's belly?

yes, an alligator will remain passive "sleep like" for a while after being placed on its back -- rubbing the belly may or may not help the process. I presume it is part of a nervous system kink in the cerebellum that stops movement for a short period. I've seen it done at the Ross Allen Institute in Silver Springs, Florida.
