The word duck is the common name for the family of birds, Anatidae. Some of the the common characteristics of this family of birds are webbed feet, elongated bodies, elongated necks, and most importantly a slightly serrated bill beak.
The slight serration is used as a filter in the water. Members of the duck family collect water and small portions of vegetation or small animals in their bills. They then push the water out of the serrations, and the food is left.
A duck could not eat a carrot, or even a baby carrot because of the shear size. However, if the carrot was cut into small enough portions, then a duck would have no problem consuming it.
