The external genitals of the mare are directly under the tail. It is very easy to sex a horse by lifting the tail - a male horse will have an anal opening and nothing else, a female horse has a long vaginal opening underneath the anus. Between the hindlegs of a female horse is the udder. Usually it is small and not noticeable. When the mare is pregnant or has recently had a foal, it is much larger and the two teats protrude. Between the hindlegs of a male horse are the testicles (although in a gelding these are either absent or very much reduced in size depending on the method used to castrate him). The sheath of the penis can be seen from the side when the horse is standing at ease, because it is slightly in front of the hind legs. A mare's udder cannot be seen from this position unless she is pregnant or nursing. Neither sex should have anything protruding between the front legs. If there is something there, it is probably a growth and you should have it checked by a vet.
