Cats' whiskers sense their surroundings, plus the whiskers grow to the outward size of the cat. The tiger or cat will put its head in somewhere first, and if its whiskers are crushed, it will tell the cat that it will not fit through that gap. Whiskers can also sense vibrations in the air.
All cats use their wiskers to judge the width of openings. It wouldn't do for a tiger to try to push through a tight opening in the brush and scare away its prey, would it?

In cats, whiskers are a way of measuring the size of a space that the cat is considering entering. The cat can tell, by how much his whiskers are pushed back, whether he is likely to get trapped in a passage that he is putting his head into.

the tiger's whiskers are for letting it know if it can fit inside tight spaces. the whiskers are very sensitive; so if they brush up against something hard, it might hurt them.

Helps them find their way in narrow areas. The whiskers are like feelers and extend the width of their bodies, so they know if they might fit in a small area or not before entering.

How can whiskers help cats?

Cats use their whiskers as a guideline for the size of their head. Say a cat is trying to fit through a hole and his whiskers rub, then he knows that he will get stuck if he continues into the hole.

What is the purpose of the whiskers on squirrels?

Cats have whiskers because they use them to check if they can go through any spaces. Notice that if the cat does not go through some space it is because he/she cannot fit its whiskers, therefore whiskers are the length of a cats body width. Animals use their whiskers to detect how big or small a hole is and if they put their head through it will they be able to get there head back out. i would recommend never to cut an animals whiskers off. Animals with whiskers also use them to assist sight in the dark. That way they don't run head-first into things, indoors or out. It is okay to cut a cat's whiskers, as it will not harm the animal, but it is highly unrecommended. It will unbalance them, they could run into things more often, and it could quite possibly be painful, as there are nerves at the base of the whiskers, so they can definitely feel it. This is one of these "Do not try this home, EVER!" things.

Do not cut your rabbit's whiskers because they are important sensory tools that help a rabbit navigate in front of them (a blind spot). However, in the accidental case that you do, do not worry; the whiskers will grow back.
