Partial shade, near flowers is best. Full sun tends to ferment the nectar (sugar water) faster. We hang several feeders 20-30 feet apart so males don't dominate the nectar.

Added: putting multiple feeders, even 2 or 3 feet apart will get a lot more birds.

yes it is actually better to hang it there because the food doesn't go bad as quickly.
