You should never put a pet through the x-ray machine. When traveling with a pet in a carry-on carrier, it is best to remove the animal from the carrier, put the empty carrier through the x-ray, while you hand-carry the animal through the metal detector or scanner. Alternatively, you can request that the agents hold the carrier, while you go through the metal detector or body scanner; you can then remove the animal and let them put the empty carrier through the x-ray. In either case, make sure that you have a good grip on your pet at all times--you do not want an escape in a busy airport!
