Yes. Male dogs that are not castrated usually prefer the left paw. Females not castrated prefer the right. Hormones will effect the paw preference. Once the dog is spayed/neutered it changes.

What is paw preference?

How do scientist detect paw preference?

I'm not aware of how scientists determine paw preference, but as a dog trainer for ten years I have two methods that seem to work: The most reliable is also the simplest. First, take a treat and hold it in front of the dogs nose. Slowly bring it back on one side towards his tail, so that he follows it, and bends his body into a "U" shape. When he's stretched as far as he can, give him the treat. Repeat, but this time bring the treat towards the other side of his body. Repeat this exercise several times and watch for which side he can stretch the farthest on. The side that is most consistently more flexible is also the side of paw preference. The second is not quite as reliable and requires more cooperation from the dog, but if you do it enough times you can easily determine paw preference. Take a toy that your dog likes and play fetch, each time trying to throw the toy straight away from you. Notice if your dog turns to the right or left when turning around to come back to you. The most consistent direction is also the side of paw preference.

How can you identify if your dog is righty or lefty?

One way to identify if your dog is right or left-pawed is to observe which paw they use first when reaching for a toy or treat. You may also notice a paw preference when your dog is performing tasks that require dexterity, such as digging or holding objects. Engaging in activities that encourage the use of both paws can also help you determine their preference.
