Yorkshire Terriers

The Yorkshire Terrier is a cute, clever, adventurous toy breed. They were created through selective breeding during the 19th Century to be ratters and mousers in mines and textile mills. The first Yorkies were larger than today's small designer breed. Bigger Yorkies were carefully bred with smaller and smaller Terrier breeds to become the Yorkshire Terriers we have today.

Yorkies have a long, silky coat that should be brushed and detangled often. Their head is tan, mixed with a blue-grey color. Their backs are black and sometimes mixed with blue-grey. Legs are tan and their feet have black toenails.

All Yorkie puppies are born with V-shaped, floppy ears that eventually become erect. Some Yorkies, though, have ears that never stand up, but these dogs are equally as adorable -- just not show quality.

Most U.S. breeders remove the dew claws and dock the tails of their Yorkshire Terriers; however, in Europe, it is illegal to dock a dog's tail. So European Yorkies have fringy tails that curl upward.
