Usually, true. It depends on the mare. Some mares will "hold" their foals until they feel comfortable/secure enough to drop. Our mares have usually always foaled in the middle of the night. I've written an article on this: This is the link: http://www.ehow.com/how_4526561_prepare-mare-foaling.html (mysassy) Exuse me :) I know that it also depends on how many foals the mare has had because a maiden mare will take longer than a mare who has had more than 2 foals.

How many hours does foaling take?

How long will a horse bleed after having a colt?

A mare shouldn't bleed at all after foaling. If she does it is an indication that something is wrong that would require veterinary attention. After the foal is born the placenta will be expelled from the mare which will be red and may appear bloody. This should be completely expelled within a half hour after foaling and should never be pulled on to help it come out. If the placenta has not detached after 4 hours, call your vet because the mare may have a uterine infection. A mare shouldn't bleed at all after foaling. How long can a mare lactate before foaling?

A mare may lactate days or even weeks before foaling, but this can be a serious foaling complication. A mare's first "milk" isn't milk at all. It's called colostrum and it contains the foal's immunity to disease. Some mares may leak a little colostrum before foaling. Usually the foal is born within about 48 hrs. If the mare begins to leak large amounts before foaling, you may need to be prepared for a complication after the foal is born. If all the colostrum has leaked out, there will be none, or not enough for the foal and the foal may become sick and die. A veterinarian can do a quick stallside test to see if the foal has eaten enough colostrum to give it the immunity it needs to survive. If the foal fails the test, IGg may be given to the foal orally (within the first 24 hrs) or thru an IV to save it.

How long does foaling last?

From entering the first stage of foaling, to the time that the foal comes out should not be longer than 4 hours. The foal should come out less than an hour after the second stage of parturition begins. The second stage begins after the rupture of the membranes (when the fluid comes out) - and abdominal straining will begin. If a foal takes longer than 1 hour to come out after the second stage has begun, it has a much lower chance of survival.1 hour after birth the foal should be standing, 2 hours after birth it should be suckling and 3 hours after birth the mare should have passed the placenta.

What are the stages of a horses udder during pregnancy?

After the tenth month of pregnancy - the udder will begin to spring, the teats becoming clearly defined. As foaling approaches it will appear quite large and swollen, globules of wax appear at this stage, the mare should be watched closely, as foaling generally occurs within 24 hours. When globules drop off and milk appears, and when the muscles of the quarters sag on either side of the croup, her time is nigh. The vulva will soon distend, indicating that she will shortly come into labour
