operculum ( plural ; operculi ) is actually gill cover or lid of a cavity having gills . its major function is to protect gills as well as to move water over gills so that gill may be able to extract oxygen from water . as this lid play an important role in moving water over gills so fishes having operculum can survive even if they are stationary . on other hand fishes lacking operculi have to move continuously to survive .
all bony fishes have operculi . best example of fish having no operculum is shark.

∙ 8y agoAn operculum is a small piece of gum that is covering part of a tooth, usually a wisdom tooth, which has still not erupted fully. If that tooth doesn't erupt further more, the operculum can remain there and be easily infected because food can gather under it and it is very hard to clean.
Sometimes a dentist can do an operculectomy, where he removes that small piece of gum to uncover the tooth, only if that tooth is not impacted.
Another instance of an operculum is a body part on a fish that is the outside structure of the gills.

This is called the operculum
The operculum of a perch, or any bony fish, is located behind the jaw and face, just in front of the pectoral fin.
That is a hard but flexible cover which, in bony fish, forms the outer wall of the gill chamber. It protects the gills and also plays a major role in the pumping mechanism that regulates the continuous flow of water over them.
It is a bone that lies at the base of the stapes and is joined to the shoulder girdle by a thin muscle known as the operscularis. It may form part of a special system that provides information to the frog on the degree of twisting between its head and trunk region. It is therefore likely to assist in balance control.
