It is not clearly known how or why snakes lost their legs, but it must have held some sort of advantage. Snake skeletons are very fragile so their fossils are rare. It is thought that some lizards gradually lost the use of their legs as they preferred to move on their bellies.

yes snakes are reptiles, if you are ever unsure agian about about an animal being a reptile ask your self these questions and try to answer them by examaning the species, but keep your distance though, some animals willl bite if you get to close. question 1 to ask your self is : does it have scales? and for a snake their scales are visible, and when i mean does it have scales im not talkin bout a fish. queation2 is: have you seen this type of animal in a book, if so go back to that book and try to see what it is and number three is if you still cant identify what type of animal it is, ask somebody. im sure an adult or one of your friend can help you.

Yes - through evolution, some of the original lizard species gradually lost the use of their limbs, preferring to move around on their belly. In 'old world' pythons - the remnants of their hind legs can bee seen as small 'spurs' at either side of the entrance to the cloaca. Snakester1962 (Supervisor)
