Because the queen is the only female in the colony that lays eggs she has highly developed ovaries which fill, and even enlarge, the abdomen, so the queen is usually larger than the other bees in the colony.

In the case of honey bees, the queen's abdomen is about half as long again as that of a worker (sterile female).

You can tell what kinds of bees and wasps you have by calling your local pest control. You could also pull up pictures on the internet and compare your bees and wasps to them.
