Other than doing a necropsy, a visual inspection of the beak, nasal area and eyes are some areas to look at for disease and problems. Excess mucus can signal disease. Checking the vent may indicate egg binding and or blood from some form of enteritis.

It is hardly worth bothering unless several of the flock have died the same way.

Can a chicken survive after it is attacked by a fox?

In most cases, if a chicken is attacked by a fox, the chicken will be killed and eaten. If the attack is interrupted, however, the chicken may or may not have suffered fatal injuries. With veterinary care, a chicken can recover from many injuries. However, also note that it is much cheaper to buy a new chicken, than it is to pay for veterinaty care (which can run into the thousands of dollars quite easily).
