The extinction at the end of the Mesozoic Era was known as the Cretaceous-Tertiary (K-T) Event. It is marked all over the world by a thin layer of clay that has unusually large levels of iridium, an element that is very rare on earth. This layer is known as the K-T boundary.

This iridium is evidence that at the end of the Cretaceous a huge meteor collided with earth and the crater itself was discovered near Chixulub in the Yukatan Peninsula in Mexico.
