Ants get their food by sending out scout ants to find a food source. Once food is found ants us pheromones to alert others in their colony to where the food is. The ants follow this trail to the food source.
It depends on the kind of ant. There are thousands of kinds of ants and they get their food in many different ways. Some just wander around their nests looking for dead insects and the like which they carry back to the colony as food.
Some collect seeds that they bring back to their nests to eat. Some collect special seeds that have eatable pieces on the outside called elaiosomes, then when they have eaten the elaiosomes they dump the seeds with the rest of their rubbish, where the seeds can grow into plants that produce more seeds with elaiosomes.
Some ants go hunting for any good food supply, whether dead meat, sweet stuff called honeydew that aphids give off, or small animals that they can kill and either cut up or carry back to the nest.
If what they find is too big for them to carry alone, they go back to the nest and get other ants from the colony to come and help them drag it home, or if it is something like honeydew they fill up as well as they can and take it back to the nest and then recruit their nest mates to come along with them and collect more.
Some ants do not look for their own food at all; they go out to the nests of other ants and either enslave them, or kill their queen, laying their own eggs, that then get looked after by the host ants.
