The Mother hen will protect her brood for about 2 months until the chicks are old enough and fast enough to run and hide from danger. The chicks follow her around a do what she does searching for food. The hen will remain off the roost until the chicks start to roost by themselves and the chicks often gather around her at nigh sleeping under her wings for warmth and shelter. When a chick gets into "trouble" the mother hen will run to it chasing away the danger, usually with the rooster close behind as it is his job also.

Birds take care of their young by building a nest for them. They sit in the nest to provide warmth to their young. They also go out to get food for them and feed them. They teach them to fly, and watch over them as they learn.

Female ducks lay eggs, as nearly all birds do. The eggs must be fertilized by a male duck in order to develop. The gestation period is 28 days. The ducklings pick their way out of the shell. Baby ducks remain with their mother until they learn to swim and find food.
