The rooster chooses the hen he wishes to mate with. He will approach her and do a side step dance and dip his wings to the ground indicating he is interested. If she runs away he may chase her or just go on to another hen. After he has done his "mating" dance he grabs her by the feathers on the back of her neck and stands on her back. The hen facilitates this by crouching low to the ground. Once the rooster has positioned himself on top of her back she raises her tail and inverts her cloaca, the rooster lowers his cloaca to hers and a sperm sac is transferred. The rooster then jumps off the hen and goes on to search for another hen. The hen will shake herself, fluff her feathers up and go on foraging for her daily food.
