Singly or, more effectively, in a pack. Loinesses do the majority of the hunting, males pirate their food from the females. The males only become involved in the hunt when the prey is too large for the lionesses to bring down. Most times, females work alone but with other females so they dont have to take orders for the males. but at times when the females need more help the all go and look for male and one will mate.
Lions can catch their food by camouflaging in the golden grass, since it matches the color of their fur, and leap at their prey when the prey doesn't see the lion.
A lion is an ambush hunter, they have 2 or 3 lionesses come in, and break up the herd, guiding them towards the others in the pride. They then (almost instantly) find the weak, and single them out. Then another lioness attacks, trying to scatter the herd more, often completely separating the individual from the herd. Another pair of lionesses then moves in to head the unlucky beast off, and then, if successful it is tackled, and pinned down as the others arrive.
A killing bite is inflicted on it's throat, sometimes just a pair of small holes that pierced an artery, sometimes (on Cape Buffalo), they strangle it because the hide is to thick to pierce. Rarely do they exert their potential, for fear of damaging their teeth.
Normally the alpha never lifts a foot when capturing a meal, only when tackling big prey like the Cape Buffalo the male's strength is needed. His primary job is to protect the pride from rival males, and hunting means risk of injury, which is bad for the entire pride.
Only about 3 out of 10 hunts end in a kill.

Lions live in prides. The pride is headed by one or two male lions with many female lions and cubs. The male lions role is predominantly to mate with the lionesses and protect the pride. The female lions do bulk of the hunting for the pride. However in case of large prey like a water buffalo or a giraffe, the males too take part in the effort to bring down the prey

Lions in the wild learn how to hunt as they are cubs. The hunting practice starts when they are al11months and the act of catching their prey is perfected with time. Sounds, smell and stealth are the most important factors how lions catch their prey. If its a pride of lions, the formation helps to seal all flunks while the other lions work in picking and secluding prey being hunted.
If its one lion hunting, the closer the lion is and moves without being detected ensures a successful hunt at the shortest time. speed stealth and camouflage and direction of wind ensures the best way as to how lions catch their prey. Its the team work that counts. If the lion does not stay undetected close enough to have that perfect distance, the lighting speed always catches the prey off guard and the lions powerful paws always sweeps the prey down as the lion goes to the jugular vain and brings the prey down
Lions find their prey following them whether they go.
in the Serengeti the lions hunt but oddly enough when his mate is with cub to be born is when he will hunt. The lion with no mate will hunt all the time and the female lions hunt in groups too.
Lionesses usually do the hunting. Lions prefered prey is hoved animals, in herds. There will usually be 6-12 Lionesses taking part. One group will stalk their prey to the front, while another 1 or 2 groups will be on either side. The Lionesses by the side of the prey will give chase, causing a stampede. After this, the more experienced Lionesses towards the front will ambush the prey, hopefully bringing it down.

Male lions will always guard territories from being attacked or threatened by other animals, while female lions work together to claw or bite preys down. When the lionesses kill a prey like a wildebeest, the female lions would let the male lions to first eat the prey since male lions do all the fighting with intruding animals.
