Very often a predadator kills the weakest of a group of prey animals. The weakest are often ill. This action lessens the chances of diseases being passed on making the whole prey group healthier. Predation also acts to keep the population of a prey species in check avoid over poputalion and the resulting degrading and lessening of food and habitat.

∙ 12y agoPredators generally go after the easiest/most convenient prey. By that reasoning, predators "select" which animals will survive by allowing the best suited (poisonous/natural defenses) or camoflaged/mimics to survive.
